Recess Direction



Approach- The energy you lead with when you enter a situation or interaction.
Belly- The actual recess where kids are playing, not the time when grades are leaving or coming.
Blind Spots- An area we can't immediately see, such as around a corner or building a building.
Boundaries- A limit. When working with kids, the most important boundaries are physical, emotional, and psychological.
Centerpiece- Something the kids gather around, such as a playground, a soccer net, or a basketball court.
Cluster- A group of kids.
Clustering- The act of kids grouping.
Command- The readily-available ability to capture attention and influence behavior in a healthy, fluid, and natural way.
Engagement- Interactions.
Frame- Invisible lines or a invisible area that kids cluster or play in.
Framework of Influence- An area you oversee and guide.
Intent/Intention- The meaning or emotional origin behind something.
Influence- Using your energy and soft skill sets to guide, direct, or impact behavior and/or the situation.
Proactive Engagement- Interacting with kids before there is a problem.
Reading Recess- Watching recess for the first few moments to see how kids cluster.
Redirecting- Stopping the student's misbehavior and guiding them towards something more useful.
Regrouping- Adjusting the group's energy or behavior.
Reframing- Shifting the energy or conversation.
Rising Emotions- Escalating energy that doesn't match the group's, forecasting a problem.
Scanning- Actively viewing all areas.
Situational Awareness- Real-time knowledge of a setting.
Soft Skill Sets- Internal abilities that are directed towards people and communication solutions.
Suspicious Gathering- Students hovering over or around something.
Transition- The end or beginning of a recess when one grade is leaving and another is coming.
